The Landscape Bias
What equipment do you need to pack? How much resolution is enough? What should you photograph?
These can be hard questions. The answer that I hear most frequently is that you must decide what your product is going to be. Who do you want to have appreciate your photos? In what physical form will your photos be appreciated? By starting with more meaningful questions, it is easier to make the little decisions.
For me, social media and this blog are flexible and forgiving criteria. My yearly calendar project is a more rigid goal. It gives me direction for equipment to take on the road and what subjects I want to shoot. It is an unintended and unappreciated restraint that I cannot include images shot in a portrait orientation. Over the the last couple of years, I've come across a handful of scenes that don't lend themselves to a horizontal frame.
For 2018, I will work to change the rules of the project.
